Tonight, I have two games that have nothing in common!  First pair to not have similarities!

Super Mario Land

Best Game of the 80's Round 4 Supermariolandboxart

Date: April 21, 1989
Console: Game Boy
Publisher: Nintendo

Plot

One day, a mysterious alien named Tatanga appears and hypnotizes the inhabitants of Sarasaland, including Daisy. He kidnaps Princess Daisy in order to marry her. Mario then sets out to rescue her from Tatanga, traveling through the four geographical areas of Sarasaland and defeating Tatanga's minions along the way, as well as finding the monsters that pretend to be Daisy in order to fool Mario. Mario finally corners Tatanga in the skies of the Chai kingdom, bringing down his alien warship and rescuing Daisy, who thanks him and takes him back to her castle.

Gameplay

Mario's primary attack is to jump on top of his enemies, which normally kills them. However, there are a few antagonists who cannot be undone in this manner or may even cause damage to Mario if he jumps on them. Power-ups like the Super Mushroom work normally, but the Superball Flower enables Mario to throw "superballs" that fly at a 45-degree angle and ricochet off floors, walls, and ceilings. Unlike traditional fireballs, Superballs can also be used to collect coins, which is useful for coins that are difficult or impossible to reach otherwise.  Also, unlike other games in the series, gameplay doesn't pause briefly when Mario collects a power-up or takes damage.

Trivia

Super Mario Land was debuted with the launch of the Game Boy in Japan on April 21, 1989.  It was the first Game Boy game ever created

This is also the first appearance of Princess Daisy in the Super Mario franchise.

Digital Devil Story: Megami Tensei

Best Game of the 80's Round 4 Digital_Devil_Story_Megami_Tensei

Date: September 11, 1987
Platform: Famicom (NES)
Publisher: Namcot (Namco)

Gameplay and Plot

Digital Devil Story: Megami Tensei features several gameplay elements that became standards in the rest of the series, including demon catching and fusing and first-person dungeons. The player takes the role of two human characters, Nakajima and Yumiko, who can equip weapons and armors, and are provided with ability points and an experience level as in other RPGs of the time. Both of them have limited hit points (HP). Additionally, Yumiko can also cast magic spells and has limited magic points (MP), whereas Nakajima can collect items and use his computer to gather and summon demons. The game takes place in Makai, the world of demons, populated with all sorts of mythological creatures, monsters, deities and other beings.

Trivia

Megami Tensei was made by a company named Namcot.  Today, they are now known as Namco.

This is one of the first JRPGs to abandon the classic sword and sorcery and use science-fiction for it's theme.  Megami Tensei is now one of the best JRPG series to date.
